Chelsea Barracks
My studio project this year has involved developing a master plan for the site of the Chelsea Barracks in London. The plan grew out of a thorough study of the peculiarities of London urbanism, and subsequently included a wide range of building types from mews houses to large apartment structures. After completing the urban design portion of the studio, I focused on the design of one of the buildings in the master plan, a four story mixed use building designed to house a church, multi-use space, offices, and a child care facility.

Sam, your mixed-use building with church really reaches out and strokes my taste for good classical urbanism. It looks both elegant and comfortable. I would love to see more detail of buildings nearby once you get around to it. I am fearful - fortunately without good reason as yet - that the real Chelsea Barracks project will go off the rails again, as if the wonderful brouhaha of last year never happened. I hope you will find a way to bring your ideas to the attention of the developer and the Prince's Foundation. Please tell me a little about Judson. My e-mail is dbrussat@cox.net. I am the architecture critic for the Providence Journal, the only one for newspapers in America (so far as I know) that takes a pro-classical, anti-modernist line in commenting on the built environment. Your master plan is so brilliant that it's sure to not be chosen. Yes, it won't be chosen. It's just too good. And these days, society does all it can to stop people like you from gaining any authority or influence. So they will stop you. But please take that as a compliment. It's really a criticism of the whole system...not you.
ReplyDeleteI must say...and I might say it again...that I just love how you really try to render the buildings faithfully and somewhat realistically. Most renderings are so sketchy as to barely show what's going on. No doubt, the artists don't have the time or ability to make a nice drawing. Yours are awesome!
(Can you tell that I'm bitter at modernists?)
